Mathematics

"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe." - Galileo Galilei.

At St George’s, we inspire the children to become confident and independent mathematicians. We aim to develop children’s enjoyment of Maths and equip them for a numerate world.

We believe that mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. We use White Rose Maths to inform our Maths curriculum. This is a teaching for mastery approach which uses blocks of sequential learning steps to cover the National Curriculum. It emphasises a deep understand of Maths fostered through high quality teaching.

Our planning approach follows our Teaching and Learning Framework to enhance the 'small steps' built into White Rose. The curriculum ensures depth of learning through the application of the 'concrete pictorial abstract' approach within a progressively designed scheme of steps. Children's thinking is enhanced through the integration of reasoning and problem solving.

Additional Maths skills sessions in Key Stage 2 provide either a post-teach or fluency development session. The aim is the keep children working in line with the expected standards rather than needing to catch up. This combines with adaptations within lessons and pre-teach sessions to enable children to access the curriculum. We believe that children can consolidate their learning by working collaboratively on rich investigational activities which will inspire a keen interest and enthusiasm for the subject.

In addition to delivering the National Curriculum, we enrich the curriculum through links with Maths in the real world, a trip to an engineering site and studies in Financial Literacy.
