St George's Primary School Portland

Year 1

Year 1 consists of  Mrs. Burdett and Mrs. Francis-Mitchell who are supported by Mrs. Mutter in 1BFM.

Mrs. Russell (Mon-Thurs) and Mrs. Bowman (Friday) teach in 1R and are supported by Mrs. Whiles.

Both classes will receive additional support from Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Heals-Taylor.

Autumn

 Autumn Overview

Year 1 will inspire curiosity this Autumn as they explore animals, the human body, and light in science. In English, they will enjoy non-fiction texts, poetry, and traditional tales, while mathematics will focus on place value, addition, subtraction, and shapes. Pupils will compare old and new toys in history, learn about the UK and continents in geography, and develop creativity through drawing and painting. PE will build coordination and balance, and they will believe in their talents as they prepare for the Nativity and achieve new goals each week.

 Spring 

Spring Overview

Year 1 will inspire curiosity this Spring as they explore dinosaurs, plants, and local maps. English lessons will include dinosaur poetry and traditional tales like Jack and the Beanstalk. In maths, they will build skills in place value, addition, subtraction, and shape. Art and DT will develop creativity through moving pictures and sculpture, while computing will build coding confidence. Enrichment includes Forest School, planting, and learning about Mary Anning, helping them believe in themselves and achieve confidently.

Summer

Summer Overview

 This Summer, Year 1 will continue to inspire each other as they explore seaside holidays, seasons, and light. English lessons include texts like Handa’s Surprise and Hello Lighthouse. Maths will cover place value, addition, subtraction, and 2D/3D shapes. Pupils will enjoy art, DT cooking, and exploring data in computing. Farm trips, cooking sessions, and PE including swimming will help them believe in their abilities and achieve success as they finish Year 1.
